This month there has been much news from around the globe about mini property recoveries, strengthening of the pound against the Euro (and other currencies like the Polish Zloty and Moroccan Dirham), as well as ongoing news stories in up coming hotspots like Cyprus. Cyprus Bank reduces rates
There has been some excitement about the Bank of Cyprus' decision to cut its base mortgage rate by 1% in early June, bringing it down to 4.25%, which will come as a relief for some. However, the "some" who will benefit are those who took out a mortgage prior to 1.1.2008 and new mortgages taken out by permanent residents borrowing up to 200,000 on 1st homes. So on the whole not many overseas property buyers may benefit.
Orams case-implications for Northern Cyprus
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled on 27th April 2009 in favour of a Greek Cypriot - Meletis Apostolides, that he still has the right to his land in Northern Cyprus, even though a British couple, the Orams, had bought a house built on it, near Girne. Whilst Northern Cyprus (KKTC) is only recognised by Turkey and is not a member of the EU, this sets a dangerous precedent. More about Republic of Cyprus, Read more
