Introduction
This month has proved to be an eventful month. A trip to Morocco proved to be really interesting and an eye-opener for what Morocco has to offer. Fabulous, diverse countryside, amazing climate and a Mediterranean coastline to die for. Lots more on this and property on offer, in next month's edition of the newsletter....
Cyprus
The Greek Cypriot government is planning to boost the economy by injecting 300m into its property sector, of which 51m would create VAT reductions in hotel charges and the lowering of aircraft landing fees. This could help attract low cost airlines such as Ryanair, who have until now been reluctant to fly to Cyprus because of the landing fees. This would help boost tourism and have a knock-on effect for property prices. Although, everything is still at the discussion stage.
On top of the reduction in fees, last year the Cyprus Tourism Authority (CTO) started work on its Air Route Development Scheme (ARDS), which allows it to offer marketing support, not direct financial contributions, to airlines bringing new routes to the island. Now completed, expressions of interest for ARDS will be put out to international airlines this month (April 09).
With Larnaca opening its new airport mid 2009 to double capacity, low cost carriers are bound to be attracted. Read more....
Spain
It seems an obvious choice to put Spain among the top ten destinations for overseas property a recent survey from Globaledge has identified it as still one of the most popular searches for buyers of homes abroad. So even if buying has slowed down, interest is still there for the age-old favourite destination.
2008 was indeed a tough year for the property market on the Costas, with developers and agents going out of business. But, combined with the effects of the global economic downturn, 2009 could be the best time to buy in Spain for years. Prices have reduced to levels unseen for some time, developers and agents are doing everything they can to attract interest and are competing for a smaller pool of buyers than previously.
