Introduction
Starting back to work after Christmas, we must all be wondering what 2009 will bring. Especially for those of us with interests in the property market. Looking forward to 2009, indications are that financing may get easier, with the government plans to provide guarantees on mortgage securities (securitisation). Until now, available financing, the Euro exchange rate, lack of confidence in the global economy has stymied overseas property buying. Those that are buying, are obviously seeking keen deals and more ready-built property than off-plan, unless from a really reputable developer.
Poland has been in the news
Poland has weathered the Global recession better than most, although economic growth is slowing, 5% in 2008 with expectations that it will reduce to 2.6% for 2009, the property outlook is much better than for most Western European countries. Bank rate cut by 75 basis points to 5% in December, signals cheaper borrowing for investors, based on a lower WIBOR (Warsaw Interbank Offer Rate) rate of 5.72% on which lending is based. Read more
Whilst major cities like Warsaw and Krakow are becoming less cheap to buy investment property, towns like Łodź in Poland are up and coming investment opportunities. Cyprus has been in the news
Alistair Darling announced changes to Air Passenger Duty (APD), as part of the pre-budget report unveiled in December, for Britons flying to overseas destinations. Currently the levy is £10 for European economy fares and £40 for long haul. From 1st Nov '09, there will be 4 distance bands, at intervals of 2,000 miles from London, starting at £11. Countries such as Cyprus, Spain and Morocco benefit, falling within the 2,000 mile radius.
