Most people want high returns, with low risk. This is the holy grail and rarely exists. It is useful, however, to think through what level of risk you are comfortable with and then seek returns which fit the level of risk you find palatable. For you, the level of risk might be defined by how much money you are investing, or the location of your investment – for example investing in your domestic market might be more comfortable, for others buying in Europe might be low or medium risk. Buying or investing in off-plan property abroad or ready-built
Off-plan plays its role for many investors, it can lock in a potential price uplift in a rising market. Or for the holiday home buyer, provides the advantage of allowing input to the way the property is fitted out.
Off-plan properties will be in the planning stage and may not yet even have all the relevant building permissions or financing in place. So there is more risk with this type of purchase, however the price is usually keener to offset this.
City investing can be more reassuring
Whether you are seeking real estate as an investment or even a holiday home, cities are appealing and can reduce risks. They tend to be more populous, have greater levels of economic activity, as well as having amenities open year-round. This means there are more exit options when you come to sell because there will be local buyer demand, as well as lots of potential renters.
